Artist management
DEnnis van doorn
Guided by intuition, Dennis van Doorn is not looking for the perfect picture. Rather searching, waiting, and, if necessary, creating the moment when such a photograph can be taken. While assisting renowned photographer Cor Jaring in the 80’s and 90’s, he learned printing and the importance of appreciating the energy before any attempt to capture the image. Together they explored Amsterdam’s rough underbelly, searching for moments in need of recognition and thus preserving them for posterity.
After a long career shooting fashion, celebrity- Artists and music-icons, for publications including Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Eyemazing, van Doorn, together with Michelle Janssen (1967-2024), the founder of Paparazzi Models, bought a piece of land in Costa Rica. Where, from 2010 on worth they created a botanical garden amidst the native rainforest.
In stark contrast to life backstage, at premieres or fashion shoots, the remoteness and tranquillity of life in nature presented different and new moments in need of capture. Away from the much-loved streets and orchestrated opportunities of glamour, a more contemplative body of work has emerged.
In between the sounds of birds and those of flashlights, van Doorn has repeatedly proven to find exactly that moment worthy of pushing the button. Having lived and worked through the immense technical changes photography has undergone in recent decades, from darkroom to post-image adjustment, he knows from experience that the objective remains the same. Be there and catch that which presents itself to you.
Photographing international stars such as Dennis Hopper, Billy Idol, Debra Shaw, Helena Christensen and Minerva Portillo.
“His photographs themselves are made without any formal fear or restriction with photography. They are shot by instinct and gut inspiration. They are a moment of visual fling or one night stand.” Tyler Whisnand, copywriter, KesselsKramer Amsterdam
